Does PPR matter for quarterbacks? ›

Only in Point-Per-Reception (PPR) leagues do WRs have a larger span of values than QBs. Only in PPR leagues is there also evidence to support the theory that “all QBs score around the same number of points.” In non-PPR leagues, elite QBs should be drafted before starting on the wide receiver pool.

That No. 1 honor belongs to Josh Allen who, even after losing Stefon Diggs in an offseason trade and Gabe Davis in free agency, still does enough with his legs and his arm to earn the top spot — but it isn't unanimous.

Players score points based on their statistics for the game. For example a Quarterback is awarded 4 Points for each touchdown thrown and an additional 1 point for every 25 passing yards. They will also lose a point for each interception thrown.

Points Per Reception (PPR)

PPR stands for “point per reception” and refers to just that. In this format, each offensive player gets 1 fantasy point for each reception. PPR has become the most played of the three fantasy football points scoring systems mentioned above.

While some of your league mates will draft a QB in the third or fourth round, your waiting until the 10th or 11th can boost your RBs and/or WRs.

You'll want to have two QB starters every week because that alignment will almost always score more points than you'd get with another position in that flex role. But if injuries or bye weeks eliminate your QB options, you can still pull from any other position rather than taking a 0 at that spot in your lineup.

You have to consider quarterbacks versus other positions much earlier in a start-two draft than in a start-one, even as early as the first round. And then you have to keep considering QB vs. other positions at every other pick throughout the draft until you have your starters and backup(s) secured.

Last season, the perfect pick in the second round was often a quarterback. Patrick Mahomes' ADP was a bit high, but either Jalen Hurts or Josh Allen was typically the best pick. Those two quarterbacks also happened to be the quarterbacks most frequently on ESPN championship game teams last season.

Which QB should I pick? ›

Whenever possible, your superflex player should be a second quarterback, for even in average single-game performances they generally provide more fantasy points on a consistent basis than running backs, wide receivers and tight ends. We add scoring, we add strategy and we add interest!

In any two-quarterback case, you almost always want to start two passers because they tend to score more points than other positions. Weeks where you only start one tend to occur only when your primary signal-callers are injured or on bye.

Point Per Reception (ESPN Standard)

Head-to-Head: Points scoring format where you match up against a different opponent in each scoring period. In PPR leagues, each player in your starting lineup receives points per every reception.

Yes, quarterback scoring has reached record-setting levels, with three of the four 400-point fantasy seasons in history coming in the past four years, while the position (as a whole) managed its three best fantasy point totals in those same four years (2020, 2021 and 2018, with 2019 placing fifth).

With this fact in mind, it's always worth mining the mid and late rounds for potential difference-making quarterbacks. Someone always breaks out at this position, obliterating preseason projections and acquiring new draft coordinates for the following season.

For example, QB is the highest-scoring position in most leagues. But elite RBs and WRs typically get drafted first because you need more starters at those positions and their scoring drops off more sharply. That's why the best way to draft is generally to prioritize RBs and WRs while waiting on QBs and TEs.

When you get to the level of PPR performance where one player basically wins you the week, 30+ points, a WR is almost twice as likely to do it than a RB. No need to go further with this. It's always going to be true that WRs are more explosive than RBs in PPR.

There's always a trade-off, though… taking a QB in Round 1 means no Christian McCaffrey, no Justin Jefferson, etc. If you play in a lot of leagues and have missed out on these other positional studs, a 2QB format gives you a much better shot at drafting one of them deep in the first round.
